We hope everyone had a very relaxing time over the October holidays. Primary 3/4 were working very hard before the holidays learning lots of things about China! We absolutely loved the topic and learned lots of exciting things about the country. We looked at where China was in the world and practised our mapping skills. We enjoyed looking at a video about school life in China and creating an information poster comparing schools in Scotland to China. We have been practising presenting our information with confidence and we are trying to use eye contact.
In Kirklandneuk we always link our maths to real life situations. During our China topic we loved practising recognising coins and notes and paying for items in the Chinese Restaurant. It also helped us practise our drama skills! We also explored weight by weighing items that we needed to create our stir fries.
Another exciting part of our topic was planning and making our delicious Chinese stir fries. First we had to write our recipies for our dishes and then we chopped the vegetables with Miss Lochhead’s help. The best part was our Chinese afternoon when Mrs Kingsley cooked our ingredients and we got to taste our fantastic creations! We also got to try some tasty green tea. We had a fabulous afternoon as you can see from our faces.
We learned that at Chinese New Year, people give each other money envelopes as a gift. The amount in the envelope has to be an even number for good luck! The colours are always gold and red, again for good luck. Look at our designs below.
We also learned about Chinese animals and worked co-operatively to choose important information about those animals to create a fact file. We were experts on different animals and had to confidently teach the other children what we had learned.
Kyle’s aunt came into our class to tell us all about life in China because she lived there for two years. She was absolutely fantastic and we learned even more facts about China from her.
In Kirklandneuk and Room 10 we reward children that have excellent behaviour. Most children in Room 10 are always very well behaved. As a well done to those children they were able to take part in our fantastic end of term reward. We had lots of fun looking and touching many different animals. Miss Lochhead also rewards the well behaved children in the class with the Wii at Golden Time which is very popular on a Friday!
